Stacey Hellman

Hello and welcome! I'm Stacey Hellman, and I'm excited to have joined this group of amazing therapists! I believe we are all doing the best we can with what is available to us at the time. However, sometimes our "best" does more harm than good, and it's a sign of health to be able to recognize that we need help and be willing to reach out.  My goals are to help clients gain insight, connect with themselves authentically, heal from the past, and live more fully in the present moment. I would describe myself as compassionate, insightful, open minded and creative.

I obtained my bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1997 from St. Mary's College of MD and then graduated from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in 2002 with a focus on mental health.  My professional career began at the Howard County Health Dept. Addictions bureau doing individual and group therapy with adolescents. Following that, I worked at the Kolmac Clinic which is an intensive outpatient substance abuse program for adults, again doing individual and group therapy.  To further my education, in 2010 I completed a lengthy trauma certificate program from the Advanced Psychotherapy Institute. As a result of this training in particular, my overall approach to therapy has become more holistic (incorporating not just the mind, but the body and spirit as well). I have learned so much from my clients and I am continuously awed by the resilience of the human spirit to heal and grow despite tragedy and pain.

I am comfortable working with adolescents and adults from all walks of life on a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, relationship conflicts, eating disorders, addictions, self-destructive behaviors, stress management, grief and loss, gender identity issues, sexual orientation issues, and developing a healthier lifestyle.  While my approach includes cognitive behavioral therapy, creative modalities (art, journaling), psycho-education, guided visualization, and yoga, I believe what clients need most is a safe, comfortable atmosphere, and a non-judgmental, compassionate therapist who listens intently.  I also find light humor and maintaining a positive attitude to be extremely helpful overall for myself as well as clients.

I encourage you to "shop around" when looking for a therapist; you are worth the time and energy it takes to find the right person! If you would like to schedule an initial appointment, we can talk about whether it feels like a good fit and go from there.
